Five New Netflix Shows To Be Excited About

With the return of House of Cards in a month and Daredevil soon after, say goodbye to your weekends. But put aside your love for Frank Underwood’s White House drama or Matt Murdock blindly saving Hell’s Kitchen. Netflix recently announced premiere dates for 11 shows (yes, that’s right, 11!). That’s a whole lot of weekends gone. Here’s a list of five brand new upcoming Netflix shows to get excited about in 2016.

1. Love (19 February)

Created, written and executive produced by Knocked Up’s Judd Apatow, Love follows nice guy Gus (Paul Rust, who also produces) and wild-child Mickey (Community’s Gillian Jacobs). The show will explore male and female perspectives, with both characters navigating through the thrills and embarrassments of clichéd relationship stereotypes and other things they were hoping to avoid. The series has already been renewed for a second season, and its 10 episode first season will land on 19 February.

2. Flaked (11 March)

Arrested Development’s Will Arnett creates and stars in Flaked, a comedy about Chip, a self-helped guru and celebrated long-time resident of Venice, California. He falls for the object of his best friend’s fascination and finds himself tangled in a web of lies and semi-truths. His image and sobriety begins to unravel and soon finds himself struggling to stay one step ahead of his life. No further details have been released, though the show is set to stream its 8 episodes on 11 March.

3. The Get Down (12 August)

Created by Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby), The Get Down is a musical drama set against the backdrop of the South Bronx in the late 70′s, as hip-hop music begins to find its voice in the New York borough. It stars Shameik Moore, Justice Smith, Tremaine Browne Jr and Skylan Brooks as a group of teenagers exploring the musical revolution within their community. Newcomer Herizen Guardiola plays a young girl with an incredible voice who dreams to be a disco star in defiance of her religious family. The series will premiere on 12 August.

4. The Crown (TBA)

Based on the award-winning play ‘The Audience’ by Peter Morgan, The Crown tells the story of Queen Elizabeth II’s early reign. The season will focus on her early years as a young monarch who’s faced with the prospect of leading the monarchy post-World War Two, her marriage to Prince Philip as well as her friendship with the Prime Minister Winston Churchill. The show stars Claire Foy as The Queen, Matt Smith as her husband Prince Philip and John Lithgow as Winston Churchill. Expect the 10 episode series later this year.

5. Marvel’s Luke Cage (TBA)

Luke Cage is the latest Marvel superhero to get the Netflix treatment after appearing in Jessica Jones last November. Mike Colter will return to play the superhuman, who goes into hiding as a fugitive after a sabotaged experiment gives him superhuman strength and unbreakable skin. He attempts to build a life in Harlem but soon has to confront his past. The series will also star Mahershala Ali, Alfre Woodward, Simone Missick, Theo Rossi and expect a guest appearance from Rosario Dawson who will reprise her role as Claire Temple from Daredevil. All episodes are set to premiere sometime later this year.
