Six die as Met Office issues first ever extreme heat warning

Six people have drowned in lakes and rivers in England over the hottest weekend of the year, it was confirmed after the latest victim's body was recovered.

The news comes as the Met Office announced it has issued its first-ever extreme heat warning.

The amber warning covers South-West England, South Wales, the West Midlands, and parts of Hampshire, and lasts until the end of Thursday.

A body was recovered from flooded Victory Quarry in Derbyshire at 11pm on Sunday, four hours after a man was reported missing after getting into difficulties.

Five other people also lost their lives in separate swimming tragedies as temperatures pushed past the 30C mark in the hottest weekend of the year so far.

A teenage girl died after getting into difficulty at Ducklington Lake in Witney, Oxfordshire, on Sunday.

Police were called to the scene at about 2.35pm and the girl was pulled from the water.

She died later in hospital, Thames Valley Police said.

The force tweeted: “As you might be aware, our officers attended Ducklington Lake, in Witney at 2.35pm today after a fear for welfare report concerning a teenage girl in the water.

“Officers attended with both fire and ambulance services, and the girl was brought from the water and taken to hospital. Tragically, the girl later died in hospital.

“The girl’s family have been informed, and are being closely supported by specially trained officers. The death is being treated as unexplained and non-suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

“We are very sorry to bring you this tragic news. Our thoughts are with the girl’s family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.”

In Greater Manchester, the body of a 19-year-old man died in Salford Quays after he had gone missing on Sunday afternoon.

Greater Manchester Police tweeted: “Sadly, despite a rescue operation at Salford Quays this evening, a 19-year-old man has lost his life.

“Our thoughts are with this young man's family and friends, and the people who witnessed the tragic events.”

The body of a teenage boy was also discovered after he went missing in the River Eden in Rickerby Park near Stony Holme, Carlisle, on Saturday.

His body was found at about 11.45am on Sunday.

On Monday, he was named by Cumbria Police as Mohammad Abdul Hamid, 16, of Barrock Street, Carlisle.

Meanwhile, in York, the body of a man in his 50s was recovered from the River Ouse on Sunday evening, close to the Water End Bridge.

The emergency services attended the scene after being alerted by kayakers shortly before 5pm.

North Yorkshire Police tweeted: “Sadly, the body of a man in his 50s was recovered from the River Ouse, close to the Water End Bridge in York this evening.

“Officers attended the scene, along with the fire and ambulance services, after being contacted by kayakers shortly before 5pm.

“While formal identification is yet to take place, we believe we know the identity of the deceased but are awaiting confirmation. His next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this very sad time.”

A body was recovered from the water at Crookes Valley Park, South Yorkshire, on Sunday evening after reports a man got into difficulty while swimming.

Emergency services found the body just before midnight.

Four fire engines were called to the scene at the park, which has a large lake at its centre.

Underwater teams were deployed and divers began to search the lake.

South Yorkshire Police said on Monday that a body had been found just before midnight. Formal identification has not yet taken place.

A spokesman for the force said: "Emergency services were called to Crookes Valley Park at around 7.31pm last night, after receiving calls that a man had got into difficulty in the water.

"Sadly, the underwater search team discovered a body just before midnight.

"Formal identification has not yet taken place."

Four fire engines were called to the scene at the par, which has a large lake at its centre.

Meanwhile, police and firefighters at Victoria Quarry, Derbyshire, spent four hours searching for a man after he was reported missing at around 7pm.

After a body was recovered, the local fire service described it as a "tragic incident" and said flooded quarries were especially dangerous.

Group manager Paul Hawker said: "The thoughts and sympathy of everyone from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service and all involved are with the family and friends of the deceased at this distressing time.

"With the hot weather set to continue and lockdown restrictions now lifted, we know people will be out and about enjoying the sunshine but ask that people stay safe and stay out of the water."
