Man critically injured after five hit by a car in south east London

Five people have been injured - one critically - after a car hit a wall and ploughed into a group of pedestrians in London.

The accident took place in Bromley Road in Bellingham, Lewisham, in south east London at 8.20 on Sunday morning.

Reports suggest a black Mercedes came off the road, hitting a row of metal bollards and running into the group before colliding with a low-wall.

The five injured people - four men and a woman, believed to be aged between 25 and 46 years - were treated at the roadside before being taken to south and east London hospitals.

A 25-year-old man remains is in critical condition, while another man the same age and a woman of 35 who were previously critical are now in a serious but stable condition.

Two other men, aged 36 and 46 sustained minor injuries in the crash.

An air ambulance also attended the scene, and paramedics said the group had been treated for head, chest and leg injuries.

The driver of the car was detained at the scene following the crash, and has now been arrested under suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He was also arrested on suspicion of drink driving before being taken to hospital to receive treatment for a head injury.

Police have said the accident was not terror-related.

Roads around the area, which was close to a manual car wash and opposite a row of shops, remain closed while investigations take place.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the collision to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit's witness appeal line on 020 8285 1574.
