Five taken to hospital as A1(M) southbound closed in County Durham due to crash

Five people have been taken to hospital after a multi-vehicle crash on the A1(M) southbound.

A stretch of the motorway between junction 61 for Bowburn and junction 60 for Chilton is closed. Emergency services were called to the scene around 9am, including four ambulances.

Five patients were taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital. The extent of their injuries is not yet clear.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called to a multi-vehicle road traffic incident on the A1 at Coxhoe at 9am this morning.

"We dispatched four double crewed ambulances, a duty officer and a commander to the scene. Five patients were taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital."

Durham Constabulary say that it is not yet known when the road will reopen.
