Flags Representing US COVID Deaths Planted at National Mall

Over 660,000 white flags are being planted in the lawn at the National Mall in Washington, each representing a COVID-related death in the US.

The flags are being planted for a project called In America: Remember, which was due to open to the public on Friday, September 17.

“Visitors are invited to personalize flags for someone they have lost,” the group behind the project said.

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland and DC Mayor Muriel Bowser were expected to speak at the opening ceremony, according to the Washingtonian.

Maureen Cohen Harrington posted this footage showing the progress made on Wednesday, saying that while 450,000 flags had been planted, there were still 210,000 to go before the launch on Friday. Credit: Maureen Cohen Harrington via Storyful
