As many of us hop on a plane, ready for our hols, we're usually met with a warm welcome from the cabin crew. They're the epitome of professionalism and friendliness, always there to greet you with a smile as we find our seat.

But it turns out their role goes beyond just pleasantries. Sure, they're on hand to ensure passenger comfort, dish out meals and drinks, and maintain safety but there's more to their job than meets the eye.

Unbeknownst to many, they've been sizing us up from the get-go. A TikTok video has taken the internet by storm after user @MrsMiva , a flight attendant herself, spilled a major industry secret, reports BirminghamLive.

In her viral revelation, she explains the true purpose behind the cabin crew's welcoming routine as passengers board the aircraft.

Overlaying a clip of herself, she disclosed: "Did you know that your flight attendant greets you not only out of politeness, but also to check whether you are too drunk or sick to fly?"

The revelation has racked up over a million likes, leaving countless users utterly flabbergasted. It seems plenty were clueless about this subtle assessment at the gate.

One user expressed their surprise, commenting: "Wait, is there a reason why they always ask me where I sit when I go onboard" While chimed in: "To see if you're 1. Safe to fly (not intoxicated) and to see if you could help in an emergency."

A third person chimed in: "And looking for suspicious behaviour." While a fourth added: "We are also picking out good candidates in the event of an emergency."

Several individuals shared their personal experiences to support this theory. One person revealed: "I was denied an international flight from England to America because they thought I'd die en route from being so sick." While another commented: "True, and it's the toughest part of the day. Without being paid!"

However, not everyone was convinced by this theory, with some choosing to make light of the situation. One individual joked that they believed cabin crew were friendly towards them because they're so "cute and cosy".

One person retorted: "No they greet me because they like me." Another quipped: "No they say hi because I'm super cool and awesome - that's why." Meanwhile a third jested: "No - it's because they think I'm super pretty."

Most of the time, your flight attendant will welcome you aboard the plane with a warm greeting. Typically, they'll say something along the lines of "welcome aboard" or "good morning/afternoon/evening", accompanied by a bright smile.

Regardless of the reason behind their friendliness, it's always appreciated. It helps to put us at ease and relax before take-off.
