A flight headed to the US from Germany was forced to divert to Manchester Airport and had to make an emergency landing. Lufthansa flight DLH44 - from Frankfurt, Germany, to Atlanta, America, - is understood to have diverted over the coastline of Scotland.

A spokesperson for Manchester Airport confirmed the landing of the Airbus A330 at around midday on Saturday, August 24. It is understood the flight was diverted due to a passenger suffering a medical episode on board. The MEN reported a passenger complained of chest pains, with the captain choosing to divert flight.

When it touched down in Manchester it was met by emergency services, including firefighters, on the runway as per policy, but the airport confirmed there was no need for intervention from the fire service. Paramedics at the scene are also understood to have assessed the passenger.

The condition of the passenger is not known and it's unclear as to how many passengers were onboard the flight when it was forced to land on UK soil. A spokesperson for the airport told the MEN: "The flight came in as an emergency in line with policy and it was attended by the fire service who responded, but were not required." The delayed flight was expected to take-off later on Saturday."
