Flights in and out of Devon and Cornwall airports have been delayed or rerouted to other airports because of strong winds are preventing landings and take-offs. The region is currently being battered by winds of up to 75mph with the Met Office blanketing a large chunk of the country under a double yellow weather warning for wind and rain.

The Kernow Weather Team recorded wind gusts of 75pmh from its Illogan weather station this morning with wind averages of 60mph. The strong wind and rain has led to several flights being delayed or rerouted out of Cornwall Airport Newquay and Exeter Airport.

Newquay airport posted on its website that the FR9448 Ryanair flight due into Cornwall from Malaga at 7,23am this morning had to land instead at Gatwick Airport in London, some 272 miles (437km) away. Meanwhile the 10am FR9449 flight from Newquay to Malaga with Ryanair is currently delayed along with the T3451 flight to Gatwick with Eastern Airways.

Flights in and out Exeter have also been impacted. The 8.30am Aer Lingus EI3693 flight from Belfast was cancelled. So was the 12.45pm SI2218 flight with Blue Islands from Jersey. Meanwhile the LM315 Loganair flight from Edinburgh is delayed by 10 minutes.

In terms of departures the Aer Lingus return flight to Belfast is also cancelled and so is the flight back to the Channel Islands.

The double yellow warnings for bad weather form the Met Office come as the region is still recovering from the aftermath of Storm Éowyn which swept through the country earlier this week. Forecasters at the Exeter-based Met Office have warned of widespread disruption from this morning (Sunday, January 26).

The yellow warning for wind is in place from 6am today (January 26) until 6am Tuesday (January 28). And the rain warning is in place from 8am this morning until 6am tomorrow (Monday).

Coastal areas and seafronts will likely be affected by spray and large waves. Road, air, rail and ferry transport will see disruptions, delays or cancellations. Forecasters have also warned that some properties may lose power and other services, such as phone coverage, through the weather warning.

The Met Office has said that the region is likely to see south westerly winds reach up to 70mph. Winds are forecast to ease from Tuesday morning.
