Other earlier flights are understood to have been diverted to Dublin or back to their original airport.

Five of the eleven flights that were due to depart the airport this evening from 4.30pm have also been cancelled due to the weather conditions.

In a statement on social media, a Belfast City Airport spokesperson said: "Due to adverse weather conditions across Northern Ireland, there may be some disruption to flights due to arrive and depart from Belfast City Airport.

A yellow weather warning for fog has also been issued for across Northern Ireland this evening and into Thursday. The warning is in place from 3.27pm today until 8am on November 28.

The latest forecast states for Wednesday night into Thursday that a widespread frost will develop along with freezing fog, which could become extensive. The minimum temperature overnight will be -3C.

A spokesperson said: "Wednesday's fog is expected to expand and become fairly widespread, with visibilities in some places falling below 100m. This will make for difficult driving conditions and may also lead to disruption of public transport. With temperatures close to, and in places below freezing, icy patches in freezing fog will be an additional hazard."

The forecast for Thursday starts with freezing temperatures but it will become milder later in the day. The forecaster said: "It will be a dry and bright day with sunny spells. A frosty start with any freezing fog lifting and clearing. Freshening southeasterly winds. Maximum temperature 8 °C."
