Flood alerts are in place across Lincolnshire following Monday's "relentless" rain - with river levels set to remain high for days. The Environment Agency says South Lincolnshire and Gainsborough could both be affected by flooding on Tuesday (October 1).

The agency issues three types of flood warning, with a flood alert meaning that flooding is possible and that people should prepare. It also issues flood warnings, which mean that flooding is expected. Severe flood warnings are put in place when flooding could cause a risk to life and significant disruption to communities.

There are no flood warnings or severe flood warnings for Lincolnshire, but two flood alerts are in place. In Gainborough, this is due to water levels rising at the Torksey river gauge. The South Lincolnshire flood alert follows rising levels in the River Welland after heavy rainfall.

Around Gainsborough, the roads most at risk are from Church Laneham to Rampton Road. The second alert covers Lower Welland and other watercourses from Stamford to Spalding, including Market Deeping and Spalding.

In both cases, the Environment Agency says people should: "avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded."

Lincolnshire Police has urged drivers to take care, with excess water on roads across the county. The force said: "Alert: you will have all seen the relentless rain throughout the county today, and it isn't letting up. We're seeing lots of standing water on roads, particularly the A1, so please be careful on the roads if you have to travel."

The flood alerts have been issued for the following locations:

River Trent from Cromwell Weir to Gainsborough

The Environment Agency says: "River levels are rising at the Torksey river gauge as a result of heavy rainfall. Consequently, flooding of roads and farmland is possible tomorrow morning from 7am tomorrow (October 1). Areas most at risk are Church Laneham to Rampton Road.

"Further rainfall is forecast over the next 24 hours. We expect river levels to remain high until Friday (October 5).We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are patrolling watercourses in the area."

Lower Welland

The Environment Agency says: "River levels on the River Welland remain high as a result of recent rainfall, which has led to flooding of low-lying land and roads close to the river. We expect the river to remain high throughout the next few days and flooding to gardens, driveways or outhouses is possible close to the river.

"Our forecasts indicate that flooding inside properties isn't likely and therefore flood warnings are not expected to be issued. We are constantly monitoring river levels and have staff in the field checking for blockages and clearing weedscreens."
