Flood alerts in West Midlands as England bracing for 48 hours of heavy rain

Flood alerts have been issued for parts of the West Midlands as the Met Office warned of 'heavy rain' for parts of England over the next 48 hours. The Government's flooding service has issued alerts for rivers, streams and other water ways across Birmingham, the Black Country and Staffordshire.

Flood alerts are in place at: River Stour and Smestow Brook in the Black Country and South Staffordshire; Bourne Brook in Tamworth; River Cole in Marston Green; River Blythe in Warwickshire; River Sow and River Penk in Stafford; Ledwyche Brook and River Rea in Shropshire; Rea Brook and Cound Brook in Shropshire; and the Upper Teme in Shropshire.

It comes as the Met Office issued yellow weather warnings for heavy rain across parts of England over the next 48 hours. A warning is in place over parts of Staffordshire, including Rugeley, while it also covers the East Midlands and northeastern England.

It's the latest of wet weather to hit the UK over recent weeks, with previous yellow weather warnings made. The Met Office said: "A spell of persistent and at times heavy rain is expected to affect northeast Wales and northwest England during Monday before easing on Monday night. 20-40 mm of rain is expected to fall quite widely with a few places seeing up to 60 mm during the course of the day."
