The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for portions of Hidalgo and Cameron Counties in south Texas, including the cities of Weslaco and Mercedes, until Thursday, June 21. The Houston Chronicle reported on June 19 that 1 to 3 inches of rain was predicted, but areas could receive up to 6 inches.

Cars were reported to be submerged by the flood water and several roads were closed in Weslaco and the surrounding area.

Classes at school districts, colleges and universities were cancelled or postponed on June 20 due to the inclement weather and flooding, according to reporting from The Monitor. Other offices and government buildings were also closed for portions of the day on June 20.

Other regions of Texas, including the Houston area, experienced rain and flash flooding on June 19. The affected areas in southeast Texas were still recovering from the impact of Hurricane Harvey last summer, according to news reports. Credit: Yakaren Ordonez via Storyful
