A number of flood warnings and alerts have been issued across Yorkshire following the recent torrential rain in parts of the county.

Although there are no warnings for rain are currently in place by the Met Office, the Environment Agency has confirmed numerous flood warnings and alerts for parts of Yorkshire - with the strongest warning stating that flooding is expected.

The worst hit are areas are along the East Yorkshire coast and Humber Estuary, although lesser alerts have been issued for areas further north close to the Lower River Tees near Middlesborough, further west near the Upper River Aire between Gargrave and Keighley and along the North Sea Coast at Whitby and Scarborough.

A red warning for flooding has been issued for five areas of the North Bank of the Humber Estuary, including at Hessle Haven, North Ferriby, Harbour Road and Floral Pavilion at Bridlington, Bridlington South Pier and the North Sea coast at Easington and Kilnsea.

In Hessle and North Ferriby, the red warning means flooding "is expected" and that residents should take action, such as protecting their homes and staying away from beaches, riverside footpaths and roads. The floodgates at Hessle Foreshore have been closed and there is a threat to life posed by dangerous large waves and sea spray.

Meanwhile on the coast at Bridlington, high tides are expected to cause flooding tomorrow morning. The areas most at risk are the north side of the dock area, homes and businesses along Harbour Road and the Floral Pavilion, the South Pier and Chicken Run Jetty, and adjacent car parks off South Cliff Road, between 5am and 6am.

The EA says it is "closely monitoring the situation" and has warned: "Stay away from beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads in Bridlington as large waves and sea spray could be dangerous."

In Easington, flooding is expected to hit properties on the east side of Kilnsea, including the Caravan Park, and Easington, including the Caravan Park between 5.30am and 6.45am tomorrow.

The EA said: "This period of high tides continues into the weekend and so we may re-issue this warning for subsequent tides. We are closely monitoring the situation. Stay away from beaches, coastal footpaths, and roads in Kilnsea as large waves and sea spray could be dangerous."

Over in Whitby, high tides mean flooding is possible and is currently at "alert" level - one below a red warning. The flooding may happen around high tide between 4am and 5.30am tomorrow. The areas most at risk are the low lying land and roads near the coast, including Whitby, and low spots around the harbour area."
