Heavy rain caused severe flooding that left many roads impassable in the Dumfries and Galloway region of southwest Scotland on Friday, December 30, officials said.
In the town of Dumfries, the River Nith burst its banks and flooded Whitesands, a busy road that runs alongside the river.
Local authorities said Whitesands was closed from 10 am on Friday, as the River Nith was “expected to flood the road as the day goes on.”
Videos posted by local police showed Whitesands almost entirely submerged, and floodwaters pushing up against homes and businesses along the road. The first video was posted at 9:36 am, shortly before the road was closed, and the last clip was posted about eight hours later, at 5:30 pm.
The police footage also shows a helicopter over flooded farmland in Barjarg, about 10 miles north of Dumfries, where police said crews were helping people escape from a home surrounded by floodwater. Credit: Nithsdale Police via Storyful
