Floodwaters Sweep Away House as Typhoon Rai Pummels Philippines

Typhoon Rai, known locally as Typhoon Odette, reached the eastern Philippines on Thursday afternoon, December 16, with tens of thousands of people evacuating their homes as the storm moved westward.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said that by Thursday evening, the center of the eye was in the vicinity of Carcar, Cebu, packing maximum sustained winds of 175 km/h (109 mph).

Pagasa has also warned of storm surges reaching up to three meters in height and said that rain-induced landslides were expected.
