Florida Motorcyclist Struck by Vehicle While Fleeing Police

A man on a motorcycle survived a collision with a pickup truck after driving into oncoming traffic while fleeing police in Ormond Beach, Florida, late on Friday, March 3, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office said.

Bodycam footage from officers involved in the arrest of Joshua Richardson shows Richardson among a group of bikers fleeing an attempted traffic stop on Old Dixie Highway, according to the sheriff’s office.

As officers pursue the group, Richardson can be seen entering the intersection of North Beach Street and West Granada Boulevard on a red light, driving directly into the path of an oncoming truck.

“One of them took the opportunity to look back and flip off the deputies behind him, after which he entered the intersection directly into the path of an oncoming truck,” the sheriff’s office said.

Richardson was able to run from the scene but was apprehended by deputies shortly thereafter, according to the sheriff’s office.

Richardson was charged with fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement, resisting without violence, and leaving the scene of a crash. He also received traffic citations for failure to stop at a red light and passing in a no passing zone. Credit: Volusia Sheriff’s Office via Storyful

[SIREN WAILING]

- Is that the guy with the white helmet? The one doing the wheelie.

- (OVER RADIO) Oscar 96 so far on [INAUDIBLE] Riverside. So he's either still southbound or cut over.

34, you got two motor units that we could be right here at the traffic light. If they get the light, we can just jump out and grab them. You said the only one with the white helmet?

- Yep, 10-4.

[SIRENS WAILING]

[INAUDIBLE]

- Sheriffs, K-9. Get on the ground! Do it now!

JOSHUA RICHARDSON: Sir.

- Get on the ground.

JOSHUA RICHARDSON: Yes sir. Yes sir.

[INTERPOSING VOICES]

- I'm hurt. I'm hurt.

- Turn over.

- Put your hands behind your back.

JOSHUA RICHARDSON: Sir, I got--

- Give me your hands! Shut up!

JOSHUA RICHARDSON: Yes sir. Yes sir. Yes sir.

- (OVER RADIO) What's the description of the one on foot?

- We got him.

- Idiot!

JOSHUA RICHARDSON: I know.

- Yeah, you know. Stay on your belly.

JOSHUA RICHARDSON: Sir, sir, my leg.

- Stay on your belly.

JOSHUA RICHARDSON: Yes sir.

- Looked like you were running pretty good to me.

JOSHUA RICHARDSON: Oh. Oh my god. Oh my god! Sir, sir, you've got to hold my right leg out.

- I didn't ask you to commentate, you know?

- That was dumb. That was dumb.

- You think? Then he tried to run, now he says his leg's bad.

- Oh, yeah. Ran just fine.

JOSHUA RICHARDSON: Look at it! Look at it. Are you guys kidding me?

- Seems like you ran pretty good from there to here.

JOSHUA RICHARDSON: But it's [MUTED] hurt!

- Well, no shit!

- I'm sure it does. You know how your leg doesn't hurt? You don't run from the cops and crash your bike. That's how it doesn't hurt.

- (OVER RADIO) That's affirmative.

JOSHUA RICHARDSON: Understood, but I'm in pain right now.

- Nice job. Well, don't run from the Sheriff's Office. Then you won't crash your bike.

JOSHUA RICHARDSON: You guys think this is funny?

- No, I don't think it's funny. I think it's incredibly stupid, but--

JOSHUA RICHARDSON: I'm with a group of people. They all kept going. What am I supposed to be doing?

- They ran too. You crashed and then you started to run all the way over here.

JOSHUA RICHARDSON: We're being chased by 12 cops in the middle of the night.

- No shit!

- Oh, no no, no.

JOSHUA RICHARDSON: What am I supposed to do?

- Stop!

- Stop and figure out why we're chasing you.

- Hold on. What's your first name?

JOSHUA RICHARDSON: Joshua.

- Joshua. I was the one that was behind you guys on Old Dixie, lit you up.

JOSHUA RICHARDSON: All right.

- Every one of you look right back at me and what'd you do?

JOSHUA RICHARDSON: We kept going.

- You guys all gunned it. So this is all on you.
