A 15-year-old boy is dead and a 14-year-old girl critically injured following a Miami-Dade police chase in the early morning hours of Wednesday, according to police.

Miami-Dade police officers received a call about a suspicious vehicle around 2 a.m. Wednesday, the department said in its most recent press statement.

About that time, the officers saw “a vehicle matching the description” traveling eastbound on SW 56 Street “at a high rate of speed,” according to the news release, which continues: “Officers attempted to approach the vehicle in order to further investigate, at which time the driver lost control of the vehicle, colliding into a concrete pillar.”

Police are now investigating if the 15-year-old driver had a permit to drive his mother’s vehicle, Argemis Colome, a public information officer for the Miami-Dade Police Department tells PEOPLE, noting that they believe the mother did not know her car was missing.

Police have not released the name of the teen driver, who was pronounced dead on the scene by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

The 14-year-old girl – whose name has also not been released by police – inside the vehicle, was transported to HCA Florida Kendall Trauma Center and remains in critical condition Thursday afternoon, according to police.

A GoFundMe, raising money for the family to cover “expenses associated with this tragedy” identifies the 14-year-old as Jazmin Keltz. The fundraiser has raised more than $8,000.

“They want to know what happened and why it happened and how it happened,” Michael Feiler, a lawyer representing Jazmin’s family, told NBC’s WESH2. “We all want to watch our children grow up and want the best for them, and in my personal experience, there's no greater tragedy than the possibility of losing a child.”
