Vivid green, ultra creamy and sumptuously rich, avocados are a versatile fruit that can enhance a variety of recipes.

Whether it's for rustling up some guacamole or adding a creamy touch to your toast or sandwich, it's always good to have a ripe avocado at hand.

Like bananas, avocados continue to ripen off the tree, which is why they're often found rock-hard in supermarkets and can take days to reach the perfect softness. Timing the ripeness of an avocado to coincide with your culinary plans can be a bit of a challenge - but this doesn't have to be the case.

To get those rock-had avocados ripe and ready to eat, you can try out a quick 10-minute hack shared by @freshlysnapped on TikTok, reports the Express - you just need to give them a quick bake.

The savvy social media user posted a video with the caption: "Nothing like a quick bake sesh in the oven to get that avocado to perfection. Never live with an underripe avocado again."

In the video, the food hack connoisseur begins by wrapping an unripe avocado in foil and placing it on a baking tray in the oven. They suggest setting the oven to 200 degrees and leaving the avocado in for 10 minutes.

After the timer goes off, the avocado is allowed to cool, then it's sliced open effortlessly. The reveal shows its interior as perfectly soft and beautifully coloured.

As an alternative, you can store the fruit in a brown paper bag, but this method takes longer - about two to three days. Avocados emit ethylene gas as they ripen, and enclosing them in a brown paper bag traps the gas, concentrating its effects and accelerating the ripening process.

This method works particularly well if you place the paper bag on a sunny windowsill.

If your avocado has reached its peak ripeness and you're not ready to use it, transfer it from the counter to the fridge. The cooler temperature will help maintain its ripeness for a short while. Whole, ripe avocados can be kept fresh in the fridge drawer for two to three days.
