A jailed driver hit speeds of 140mph during a police chase on the M6. Lewis Moore only pulled over the Ford Fiesta ST when he ran out of fuel.

The 34-year-old had refused to stop for officers from Staffordshire Police's Road Crime Team (RCT), near junction 14, on the northbound carriageway, on Monday, December 30. He reached 140mph and used the hard shoulder to undertake vehicles in his way, police said.

The Fiesta eventually came to a stop near junction 16 when it ran out of fuel, police added. Moore, from Neston, Cheshire, was later sentenced to 24 weeks in prison.

He admitted dangerous driving, failing to stop when required by a constable, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence and driving without insurance at North Staffordshire Justice Centre on Friday, January 24. He was also banned from driving for 14 months.

Speaking after the case, RCT officer Pc Kara Pilarczyk, said: “We are extremely grateful to the public who saw what was happening and gave officers plenty of space to work safely and detain the driver.”

Police said the RCT continued to proactively target those committing the ‘fatal four’ offences across our road networks. They are speeding, driving under the influence of drink or drugs, not wearing a seatbelt and mobile phone use.
