Holidaymakers heading to France are being warned they could be fined for not following a certain rule. The Foreign Office has said that British tourists must comply with the regulation during winter or they could be penalised.

The rule applies to travellers driving in some mountain regions in France. Vehicles need to be fitted with winter tyres or chains during the winter period.

Fines could be issued if travellers from the UK do not keep to the rule. It will be in effect between during November 1 and March 31, the Foreign Office said.

In an update on October 1, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) issued 'new information about winter tyres and chains'. It said: "Vehicles driven in certain mountain regions during the winter period (November 1 to March 31) must be fitted with winter tyres or chains.

"You could receive a fine if you do not comply. Visit the French public services website for more information (in English) about what type of vehicle this applies to; what type of tyre or chain should be fitted; where in France these rules apply."
