The UK Foreign Office has updated its advice for British travellers after Iran fired ballistic missiles at Israel. The country launched its missiles at Israel on Tuesday evening, October 1, as tensions rise following Israel's strikes against Iranian-backed Lebanese militia Hezbollah - including the assassination of the militant group's leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Now the Foreign Office has advised people visiting Jordan, which is popular with UK tourists visiting the ancient site of Petra to take extra care due to the risk of missiles being intercepted and coming down in the country.

The updated advice states: "Following recent developments in Israel, Lebanon, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, the security situation could change suddenly. On 1 October ballistic missiles targeted at Israel were intercepted over Jordan, including over Amman. This may result in falling fragments or debris. You should stay indoors and away from windows. If you encounter any projectile debris or fragments you should move away from them immediately and contact local authorities.

"As of 20:00 local time 1 October, Jordanian airspace was closed, resulting in likely flight cancellations and diversions and potential disturbances to Global Positioning System (GPS) signals."
