Foreign Office warns UK tourists in Greece 'don't walk alone'

UK tourists in Greece have been warned after a Brit holidaymakers, 26, was raped after being lured to a beach in a popular holiday hotspot. A British tourist has allegedly been raped after being lured to a beach by a soldier.

Police in Crete arrested a 21-year-old suspect who faces prosecution by a military court on suspicion of sexual assault. The 26-year-old victim claimed she met the suspected soldier in a local bar before being lured to the beach where he forced himself upon her.

Reports suggest the soldier is still in custody in Hersonissos in Greece but he has reportedly filed a counter lawsuit to claim his innocence and instead accused the victim of false accusation and defamation after the harrowing incident unfolded last week.

During the aftermarth, both individuals were allegedly arrested, with the Greek soldier referred to the military prosecutor in Chania. He will face the court later today and the victim was asked to ratify her statement.

A judge will then decide whether the suspect will be released on bail or face remand in custody. The UK Foreign Office warns on its website: "Sexual assaults and personal attacks may occur in Greece. This includes attacks on foreign visitors in tourist areas and cities.

"We recommend that all travellers follow this advice: save the location of your accommodation on your maps app, so it’s easier to find at the end of the night, set up a WhatsApp group to keep in touch with others in your group, keep an eye on each other’s drinks to make sure they don’t get spiked, don’t let a friend walk back to their hotel alone and don’t give a drunk person more alcohol."

It adds: "You should immediately report anything you see that doesn’t feel right to local authorities or hospitality management."
