Forest Fire Burns 2,000 Hectares in Gran Canaria

A forest fire on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria burned 2,000 hectares after breaking out on September 20.

This footage released on the government of Gran Canaria’s Twitter account, shows a glimpse of the fire. The blaze was described as “in an aggressive phase” and tweets from the island’s security and emergency organization indicate that the fire has a perimeter of 12 miles (20 kilometers) and has affected five municipalities.

At a press conference, Fernando Clavijo, president of the government of the Canary Islands, said that at least 300 people had been evacuated and over 500 citizens were affected by power outages caused by the fire. Credit: Cabildo Gran Canaria via Storyful
