Forest Fire in Southern Spain Emits Dark Smoke Plumes Over Costa del Sol

A forest fire sparked in southern Spain’s mountainous Pujerra area on Wednesday, June 8, emitted plumes of smoke over Andalusia’s Costa del Sol region.

Local media reported that 3,000 residents were evacuated from their homes around the town of Benahavis. The Forest Fire Extinction Service of Andalusia said the fire had affected about 2,150 hectares (8.3 square miles) of forest area to “varying degrees."

Three firefighters were injured trying to contain the blaze, officials said on Thursday. One sustained burns on 10 percent of his body and had been transferred to a regional hospital, they said.
