Dog owners have been urged to complete a small but easily forgotten task this wekeend - or risk their pets becoming ill. TikTok user Alex (@nuggypup), who shares her life with her dog Nugget on the platform, has warned pooch owners in a content video: "If you're walking your dog out in the snow today, make sure you do this one thing when you get home."

She explains that the grit used during snowy conditions "can be toxic to dogs and can also irritate their paws", so it's vital to give them a thorough wipe down upon returning home. Lauren Bennett, RSPCA pet welfare expert and veterinary nurse, said: "As the weather turns cold and the frosty mornings arrive, spare a thought for our animal friends who may be feeling the chill this winter.

"We can all take simple steps to help keep our pets, livestock and wildlife safe this winter, and if we all do our bit, we can create a better world for every kind. Sadly, some animals are facing a really tough winter and the cold weather will make it even more perilous."

According to the Association of British Insurers the average pet insurance claim in 2021 was £848. Vet fees are not standardised in the UK, and can vary from practice to practice with factors such as location, your pet’s age and the severity of the condition all having an influence on the cost.

The RSPCA said: "To help the RSPCA rescue more of the most vulnerable animals from cruelty and neglect this winter, please Join The Christmas Rescue and donate today." It adds: "If you have an elderly or sickly dog, buy a special coat or jumper to keep them warm. Stay safe when walking your dog in the dark. Wear reflective clothing and think about a reflective collar or light for your dog's collar.

"Keep your dogs away from ponds and lakes that are iced over - thin ice may break under a dog's weight. If it's snowing outside, watch out for your dogs' paws becoming compacted with snow, which is uncomfortable for them.

"Be aware that antifreeze and rock salt can be poisonous to pets. Wash their paws thoroughly after walking your dog in areas that may have been gritted with rock salt." It adds: "With darker nights and colder days, we want you and your pets to stay safe and warm this winter. Read our top tips and find out how you can keep your pets happy and comfortable."
