Aston Villa defender Calum Chambers is reportedly closing in on a permanent move to Cardiff City.

The 29-year-old is free to leave Villa this summer after nearly departing the club back in January. Chambers is now expected to complete a move to Cardiff, according to our sister title WalesOnline.

The Championship club are said to have booked in a medical for Chambers ahead of his proposed move. The versatile defender only made five appearances last season under Unai Emery, starting once in the 5-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on the final day of the Premier League season at Selhurst Park.

Chambers joined Villa from Arsenal in January 2022 and made 11 appearances in the second half of the 2021/22 season under Steven Gerrard. The following campaign, Chambers only played two of the 12 games Gerrard took charge of before he was sacked in October.

Emery was appointed in November and Chambers went on to feature 11 times before the end of the 2022/23 season, where Villa finished seventh in the league and qualified for Europa Conference League football.

Chambers currently has one year left on his Villa contract and is now poised to join Cardiff. He will reunite with former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey, who returned to the Bluebirds last year.
