An attractive former Methodist church built more than 100 years ago in an inner city suburb of Birmingham is up for sale. It is one of the lots under the hammer at Bond Wolfe’s next auction.

Saltley Methodist Church, located at 140 Alum Rock Road, in Alum Rock, will have a guide price of £350,000 plus. The former church will be among scores of properties appearing in Bond Wolfe’s next auction which is due to start at 8.30am on Thursday, October 24.

Ian Tudor, commercial auction director at Bond Wolfe, explained that the church building, which has a tall, ornate frontage, was erected in the early 1900s. Mr Tudor said: “This property is an attractive former church that occupies a prominent position fronting Alum Rock Road between its junctions with Ellesmere Road and Edmund Road.

“The two-storey building has an entrance lobby, toilets, minister's room, worship hall, offices and meeting rooms on the ground floor, while upstairs is a meeting area, side galleries, organ gallery, rear rooms and store. The building stands on a rectangular shaped site with a frontage of some 70 feet and a site depth of around 100 feet, 4,557 sq ft of space on the ground floor and 3,228 sq ft upstairs.

“The property is considered suitable for a variety of alternative uses, including a continuation of religious uses, community uses, meeting hall and hospitality venue, subject to planning permission.”

Alum Rock Road is a busy local route throughout the day with a mix of retail, commercial and residential uses nearby. Mr Tudor added: “It must be noted that the church hall immediately to the rear and the car park to the side of the property do not form part of the sale and will be retained for the use of the Saltley Methodist Church.”
