Former Angels employee Eric Kay indicted in death of Tyler Skaggs

Former Los Angeles Angels employee Eric Kay was indicted by a federal grand jury Friday in the death of former Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs.

A Texas grand jury indicted Kay on two counts. Kay was charged with giving Skaggs the fentanyl that resulted in his death in 2019. Skaggs, 27, died in July 2019. The local medical examiner’s office determined he choked on his own vomit with a toxic mixture of alcohol and opioids — including fentanyl — in his system. Kay and Skaggs allegedly texted about the pills on the night Skaggs overdosed.

The indictment also stated Kay possessed and intended to distribute fentanyl “beginning in or before 2017,” according to ESPN. The Angels denied any knowledge of Kay distributing opioids to players, and claimed they were unaware Skaggs was using opioids.

Eric Kay has cooperated with law enforcement

Kay — who spent 24 years in the Angels’ media relations department — was arrested by authorities in August. In October, Kay said he was fully cooperating with law enforcement, calling it “the right thing to do.”

Kay faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
