Former BBC controller says Gary Lineker may have presented his last MOTD

The former controller of editorial policy at the BBC has said that Gary Lineker may have presented his last-ever Match of the Day.

Richard Ayre shared his take during an interview on BBC Breakfast, saying that he does not see the difference of opinion being reconciled any time soon.

The football pundit compared the government's new small boats legislation to 1930s Germany in a tweet that has sparked a BBC impartiality row.

He said he was asked to step down from the show in the fallout of the controversy, something that has led to a mass boycott in his defence.
