Former Caernarfon mayor dies as tributes paid to man 'who would help anybody'

A tribute has been paid to a former Mayor of Caernarfon who has died. The retired councillor Anthony Yandell Williams, known as Tony, was a reliable member of the Royal Caernarfon Town Council who would do his best to help constituents.

Cllr Yandell, who was mayor of Caernarfon from 2002 to 2003, passed away at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor on November 6, aged 78. Cllr Tudor Owen told North Wales Live: "I had a shock when I found out. Somebody phoned me. He had passed away the day before."

He added: "Tony was a good, hardworking councillor. He would help anybody.

"You could ask him to do something and you could rely on him to do it. That's what you want from a local councillor for the people you represent." Get all the latest Gwynedd news by signing up to our newsletter.

He said the men had been at Segontium School around the same time. Later Tony joined the Army Cadet Force, becoming an instructor. He also looked after the stores for the cadets at Caernarfon barracks.

Both became councillors on the Peblig ward. Tudor, who has been Mayor of Caernarfon himself five times and is a former Cyngor Gwynedd chairman, said Tony helped organised the Armed Forces Day on July 3, 2010.

He also worked with the armed forces charity SSAFA and the Royal British Legion, helping veterans find furniture and other items.

Cllr Yandell, of Bryn Gwynedd, Victoria Road, Caernarfon, was the husband of the late Dilys. He was a caring father to Dylan, Iona, Jason, Liam and Andrew.

He was a father-in-law to Samantha, Rebecca and Leri. and a fond grandfather to Lucas, Nate, Finley, Mollie, Tobi, Rhys, Evan, Tesni, Llion, Iwan and Cadi.

He was also a dear brother of Sheila, Alwyn, Barry, Iola, Keith and the late Gareth and brother-in-law to June, Olwen, John, Gwenda and the late Eric and Brenda.

* A public funeral service will be held at Llanbeblig Church, Caernarfon on Tuesday, November 19, 2024 at 11am followed by interment at Llanbeblig Cemetery. Family flowers only but donations in memory gratefully accepted towards Waunfawr Doctors Surgery.
