Former Cal Poly Track and Field Star Shelby Daniele's Alleged Cause of Death Shared by Family Friend

The recent California Polytechnic State University graduate and track star died on Sept. 25 at age 23

A family friend of former California Polytechnic State University and track star Shelby Daniele, who died on Sept. 25, shared her alleged cause of death in a Facebook post.

Brian Brandenburg, who says he's the father of one of Daniele’s friends, posted on Facebook that the 23-year-old died of a brain aneurysm.

“The young lady that was the driving force in Eva's decision to run Track at Cal Poly, Shelby Daniele, passed away last night of a brain aneurysm. Completely heartbreaking,” Brandenburg shared.

Daniele's former team at Cal Poly shared the news of her death on Instagram on Thursday, Sept. 26. They said the record-breaking runner was an "amazing person" and "everything you want an athlete to be."

Per the Fresno Bee, on Friday, Sept. 27, hundreds gathered at a memorial service for Daniele at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Fresno, Calif., to honor her memory. It's the spot where she showed her early athletic ability as a member of the track and field team at Buchanan High School.

One speaker at Daniele’s memorial service said that “She made an impact on everybody’s lives” and that “She was one in a million,” according to the outlet.

In her obituary, Daniele was remembered for her kindness to others.

“She put so much effort into everyone she knew and everything she did. Everyone who had the pleasure of knowing Shelby had nothing but good to say about her, she truly was the light in everyone's life. She was such a fiery, spunky, beautiful, smart and strong light that will be deeply missed,” her obituary read.

Daniele was an "exceptional student-athlete" who spent five years lending her talents to the program, per the post. Her career highlights include being a "six-time All-Big West honoree," a "two-time Big West champion," a school record holder and a team captain.

According to the Cal Poly website, she holds the school record for the indoor 200 meter (24.69 seconds), holds the No. 2 all-time spot in the women's indoor 60 meter (7.62 seconds), had tied the No. 2 women's 100 meter record (11.58 seconds) and was No. 3 all-time in the women's outdoor 200 meter (23.57 seconds).

"But more importantly, she was an incredible teammate and leader," read the program's Instagram announcement, which it paired with photos of her in action over the years. "She cared deeply for those around her, had a remarkable heart and was a role model for so many. Shelby was truly one of a kind and will be missed dearly by everyone in the Cal Poly community. Our condolences go out to her family and friends 💚💛."

Daniele’s funeral will be held on Oct. 14 in Clovis, Calif.
