Former EastEnders star Michael Greco takes baby son home after health issues

EastEnders star Michael Greco has revealed the happy news that his newborn son Gianluca is heading home after seven weeks in hospital.

The actor, who played Beppe di Marco on the BBC soap between 1998 and 2002, announced last month that his son with girlfriend Helen Harris had been born prematurely due to a birth defect.

However, in an update on his Instagram Stories yesterday (August 17), Michael said that Gianluca had since made "an incredible recovery".

"Hi everyone, thank you so much for all your support over the last seven really tough weeks," he told fans in a video. "I've just had the most incredible news from the doctors that my boy is being discharged today.

"He's made an incredible recovery so soon, so strong. And I've just arrived at the hospital to take him home. So thank you all so much for all your well wishes and incredible support. Great day."

Writing back after the baby was born on July 1, Michael explained that the youngster only weighed 4.47lbs, saying: "The little man was born prematurely due to the fact that previous scans had failed to pick up his rare birth defect called Gastroschisis.

"The consultant suggested it was best for him to born early so that he could get the necessary care and attention.

"My heart is full already and this is by far the best day of my life. I love you Gianluca more than I can ever imagine," he concluded.
