The former Emmerdale star played Nikhil Sharma in the ITV soap for around four years, and his latest role has been revealed in the BBC One show’s autumn trailer.

In the clip, Rik is seen portraying new F1 doctor Sebastian Grayling but looks set to clash with Dylan Keogh (William Beck).

He tells Dylan: “I’m not a terrible doctor … I could be brilliant.”

The trailer takes place after the dramatic helicopter clash which occurred to mark the show’s 30th anniversary.

Charlie Fairhead (Derek Thompson) and Duffy’s (Cathy Shipton) burgeoning romance also gets some air time in the teaser clip as they stare into one another’s eyes.

What’s more, the helicopter crash is not the only stunt that looks set to be aired on Casualty this year as there are car explosions, car crashes and people falling off balconies all to come.

While there is plenty to look forward to on the show, there was also a blast from the past last weekend as EastEnders legend Pam St. Clement appeared on the programme as irritant Sally Hodge.

The 74-year-old star’s character took a particular disliking to Charlie and produced a two-finger salute while pretending to find him some sweets in her bag.

Casualty is the longest running medical drama series in the world and has kick-started the careers of Hollywood stars such as Orlando Bloom, Kate Winslet, Tom Hiddleston and Minnie Driver.
