Former Gateshead bank could be converted into restaurant and HMO lodge
A former Lloyds bank in Gateshead could be converted into a ground-floor restaurant and a six-bedroom home above.
Plans have been lodged with Gateshead Council to bring the former bank on Durham Road in Birtley back into use, with a restaurant on the ground floor and a six-bedroom house in multiple occupation (HMO) above. The proposals also state the restaurant would be open between 11am and 10pm Monday to Saturday, and 12pm until 10pm on Sundays and bank holidays.
According to the planning documents, the change of use to a six bed HMO would be a "welcome addition to the area; allowing both students and professionals the chance to live in walking distance of Birtley centre, in a property that has been developed to a high specification and designed with thought".

The documents continue: “The location of the development means that the proposal benefits from excellent transport links. There are major bus and train links within a short walking distance allowing access from all major surrounding cities and to connecting regions. In addition, the site is surrounded by town centre parking/cycling facilities.”
The plans on the council’s online planning portal indicate the restaurant on the bottom floor will take up 157 sqm. The bedrooms will vary in size between 11sqm to 15sqm, alongside a shared kitchen and living space and separate study.
At the time of writing, the application has yet to have been decided on by council officers.
