Ex-Gogglebox star calls the show a "pantomime" Instagram

Former Gogglebox star Paige Deville has shared behind-the-scenes details on the series, revealing what it's actually like to be one of the nation's armchair critics.

Speaking to The Sun about her time on the show with mum Sally Hayward, Paige explained the filming process and how you become a characterised version of yourself. "If you’re watching a juicy clip, producers say, 'You’re going to absolutely love this' through the speakers," she said.

"Sometimes they give you a 'three, two, one' countdown which gears you up and gets you ready to react. It’s a bit of a pantomime behind the scenes."

She added: "You have to understand that you’re a character in a show and you can't be your 100 per cent authentic self, otherwise everyone would be on their phones for half of the show."

Paige also went on to reveal that participants often get to view TV shows before they air and are given advice on programmes they haven't seen before. However they are sworn to secrecy about what they see.

"You have to sign a contract saying you can never talk about what happens on the show," she said.

"Once we knew who had won a reality show before it aired – you really felt like you were in the know."

Paige first joined the show in 2019, staying for three seasons before sensationally quitting in 2021, accusing show bosses of a lack of aftercare.

"I have made the decision to walk away from Gogglebox," she said in a statement on Twitter.

"It's been an experience but one I cannot continue with due to long hours of filming, restrictiveness, control of our actions and opinions & zero aftercare support but hey who cares about ex cast, their NTA winners."

Gogglebox airs on Friday nights at 9pm on Channel 4 and streams on All4.
