Former Hull FC duo appointed to new roles at West Hull community club
Former Hull FC duo Mark Hewitt and Ryan Steen will lead West Hull A.R.L.F.C. into a new era, having been confirmed as the community club's new Director of Rugby and Head Coach. Hewitt, who has coached the National Conference League side in recent years, will now move up to DOR, with Steen, a long-serving player, taking the head coach role.
The club, based at Johnny Whiteley Park on North Road, finished the 2024 season in second place before Siddal in the NCL Premier Division. They were knocked out of the play-offs by Hunslet last Saturday, having also finished in second place in the 2023 season and first in 2022.
Hewitt, meanwhile, is a former Hull FC half-back, having served the club in the 1990s. He kicked over 300 goals in his time as an Airlie Bird and also managed 27 tries from 100 appearances before having spells with Widnes Vikings and Hull KR.

Steen is a former academy player at the Black and Whites who went on to play for both Doncaster and Newcastle Thunder before representing the Green and Gold. The 35-year-old will now step up to the role of head coach.
In a statement, club chairman Terry Everson posted: "I am very pleased that Mark Hewitt has agreed to continue his long association with West Hull Community Sports Club by accepting the position of Director of Rugby, which will involve Mark controlling the coaching of all the junior teams to ensure that all the coaches are continuing to follow accepted club practices.
"Mark’s extended coaching knowledge should be of assistance to all coaches. His position as head coach of the NCL team is being taken by Ryan Steen. Ryan Wilson has now joined the first team coaching staff."
The chairman has also confirmed that Glyn Jones will remain with the first-team, as well as having a role in the club's under-18s setup. He added: "Glyn Jones, in addition to his first team involvement, will continue to supervise the Under 18s players to ensure that when first team opportunities become available, the young players are ready, willing, and very able to seize the opportunity."
