David de Gea has sent a message to Bruno Fernandes on the Manchester United captain's birthday.

De Gea left Old Trafford after over a decade in 2023 following an error-strewn season under United boss Erik ten Hag. The Spaniard's departure came at the end of his contract with the shot-stopper subsequently failing to find a new club for over a year before joining Florentina this summer.

And the 33-year-old has shared a heart-warming message to former teammate Fernandes who turns 30 today (Sunday). The pair are good friends and have kept in touch ever since De Gea's departure from the Reds.

Fernandes has previously stated his belief that De Gea deserved an official send-off in front of the United fans. The Portuguese international appeared to hint at disappointment in an Instagram post last year regarding how the goalkeeper's exit was managed.

Alongside a picture of the pair holding the Carabao Cup, the midfielder wrote on Instagram: "You deserved to say goodbye at the stadium with all the fans cheering you for all the beautiful memories."

In a second post, he added: "You made history at the club and your name will never be forgotten, and that no one can take away from you (clapping emoji). All the best for what’s coming for you and your family."

United sources insist no contract was ever formally offered to the 33-year-old, despite reports suggesting the goalkeeper had signed terms only for them to be withdrawn.
