Former Rangers Owner Detained In Mexico

Former Rangers owner Craig Whyte has been detained in Mexico after failing to attend a number of High Court hearings in London.

Sky Sports News HQ understands Whyte was detained by authorities after arriving in the country on a flight on Wednesday.

A warrant was issued in October for the 43-year-old in connection with the sale of Rangers Football Club in 2011.

Gary Withey, David Whitehouse, Paul Clark and David Grier were all charged over an alleged fraudulent scheme involving the club three-and-a-half years ago. Withey was also charged with an alleged breach of the Companies Act 2006.

The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service made a statement to confirm his detainment.

"We have been advised that the warrant for Craig Whyte has been executed by the Mexican authorities and our International Co-operation Unit, working with Police Scotland's Fugitives Unit and the National Crime Agency, will take the necessary steps to secure his appearance at Glasgow Sheriff Court to answer the warrant."

Whyte took control of Rangers in May 2011 but the club entered administration in February the following year.

The oldco Rangers was consigned to liquidation before a newco Rangers emerged, with the team starting life in the third division in the summer of 2012. Whyte was subsequently banned for life from any involvement in Scottish football.

There are two warrants out for Whyte; one from the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service and the other warrant from the High Court in London.
