A former Royal Marine standing as Labour's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the Plymouth Moor View seat - currently held by former Army captain Johnny Mercer - has launched his campaign within hours of the Prime Minister's announcement of a General Election.

Fred Thomas began with a rally at the heart of the constituency on Whitleigh Green and in a speech to local people and Labour activists.

He set out his first steps for the local area, which included tackling the cost of livinig crisis, working with local Labour leaders to cut dental and NHS waiting lists, working with police and residents to tackle antisocial behaviour and see a return to neighbourhood policing.

Fred Thomas, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Plymouth Moor View said: "As a former Royal Marine I am proud to launch my campaign to be the next Labour MP for Moor View. I live here and I know that our community deserves better than the past 14 years of Tory decline. I will never take your vote for granted.

"Over the next few weeks, I will set out my plans to change Moor View. I know that tackling the cost of living crisis facing families in Plymouth is vital to you."

Fred added that he feels Rishi Sunak's Conservatives, as well as Liz Truss "crashed the economy and made working people pay the price".

He said: "Labour will hard wire economic growth into the budget and spending reviews, with a reformed and strengthened Enterprise and Growth Unit.

"There are over 22,000 patients on an NHS dentist waiting list in Plymouth and it’s nearly impossible to see your GP, Rishi Sunak has broken our NHS. The last Labour government achieved the highest patient satisfaction in the history of the NHS. We did it before and we will do it again. Together we can change Moor View for the better."

Last year, writing for PlymouthLive, Mr Thomas explained how he joined the forces in an effort "to serve" noting that his mum was a teacher and his dad a civil servant.

He explained how during his time with the Royal Marines he had helped people "build critical infrastructure, develop health services, and ensure children did not go cold and hungry". However, on returning home between deployments he said he was "deeply concerned to see growing numbers of our own people in desperate need of those same services".

He remarked: "When you are one of the largest economies in the world, no one should be forced to choose between heating and eating, no child should go to bed or school hungry, and no one should struggle to access medical care they so desperately need."

He added: "I have dedicated all my working life to public service, a privilege I hope to continue by representing the people of Plymouth Moor View with the same drive and determination that I demonstrated in the Royal Marines.

Sir Keir Starmer, Leader of the Labour Party, said: "This is a chance to change Moor View with Labour. Over the course of the last four years, we have changed the Labour Party and returned it once more to the service of working people.

"All we ask now, humbly, is to do exactly the same for our country. And return Britain to the service of working people. A vote for Labour is a vote for economic and political stability, an end to Conservative chaos, and a long-term plan to rebuild Britain."
