Former Somali leader Mohamud wins presidency again

STORY: Former Somali leader Hassan Sheikh Mohamud won the presidency on Sunday.

It's the second time he will be president.

The vote was only by lawmakers in an airport hanger protected from Islamist insurgents by blast walls.

It was a long day with three rounds of voting.

Now, Mohamud again faces the daunting task of tackling drought, hunger and seemingly never-ending conflict.

Somalia’s 15 million people have endured civil war and clan battles with no strong central government since dictator Mohamed Siad Barre was toppled in 1991.

Earlier, blasts from mortar shells rang out near Mogadishu airport, where the vote was held, but there was no claim of responsibility and the explosions did not disrupt the vote.

Simply holding the elections was a success of sorts but Somalia is still unable to hold a direct vote due to insecurity.

Mohamud also faces the task of proving his skeptics wrong who complained that the leading candidates were old faces recycled from the past, and have done little to stem conflict and corruption.
