Former Stirling Council leader Chris Kane has resigned as a councillor for the Stirling East ward.

The Labour representative was elected as leader of the local authority in May 2022, but stepped down earlier this month after winning the contest to become the MP for Stirling and Strathallan.

Veteran Labour councillor Margaret Brisley was then elected to take up the reins at Viewforth - and Mr Kane, who has represented Stirling East since 2017, has now decided to focus fully on the job in London.

Cllr Brisley said: “Chris worked very hard to represent the interests of his community and the people of Stirling during his time as councillor and council leader.

"I know it was a job he thoroughly enjoyed and was honoured to do.

“I would like to thank him for his efforts over the past seven years and I look forward to collaborating again with him in the future in his new role on matters where we have shared objectives.”

Following his election, Mr Kane had continued to carry out his roles as both council leader and representative for Stirling East but slowly ceded responsibility for those as his MP role grew.

He told the Observer earlier this summer: “We are in the summer recess period.

"I’m still doing my job as council leader, still engaging with staff and answering emails etc, but this has been an exceptionally busy time for many of the officers and the recess has provided some breathing space in the meantime.

“It’s something, however, that I’ll be addressing further in the coming weeks.”
