A former teacher is facing jail for sexually abusing pupils at a boarding school over 28 years ago.

Paul Stevens, 60, subjected three boys to a catalogue of horrific abuse during his time working at the £8,000-a-term Abberley Hall School in Worcestershire.

A court heard the housemaster assaulted one victim using a shampoo bottle and inappropriately touched other students - but his actions were "ignored" by the school’s headmaster.

Stevens appeared before Worcester Crown Court charged with a string of sexual offences against the three boys between January 1983 and March 1991.

The court heard how concerns had been raised at the time about Stevens' actions towards the boys but nothing was done by then-headteacher Michael Haggard.

On Wednesday, he changed his plea to guilty as it emerged other potential victims had also come forward. Stevens admitted ten charges of indecent assault on a child and five charges of indecency with a child.

Stevens, of Gwynedd, North Wales, had a study on the groundfloor in the main school building and also a bedroom close to the boy’s dormitory in "the tower".

Two friends of the first complainant raised concerns about Stevens stroking him under the duvet when it came to ‘lights out’, telling a parent who then spoke to the headmaster.

The jury heard from first hand counts how incidents included masturbation, sexual touching and oral sex. Some of the counts reflected multiple incidents, while one of the victims died in 2010.

Prosecutor Fiona Elder said: 'For whatever reason he ignored any concerns about the behaviour of Mr Stevens."

'However nothing was done or said as a result of this’

Under a new head teacher Stevens was issued with a formal warning about what was described as his "over familiarity with the boys" in September 1998. In January 1999 he received another warning before leaving the school at the end of that year.

Judge Andrew Lockhart QC adjourned the case for pre-sentence reports to be prepared ahead of his sentencing on July 5.

'It seems other men in the interim have come forward and have complained about conduct towards them.'
