A new fortnightly rubbish collection is starting in parts of Cornwall this week. Cornwall Council is rolling out the new recycling and waste system over two years in different areas.

It says so far the system, which is already in place across Mid Cornwall, South East Cornwall and West Cornwall, has proven to be a success. Recycling has increased from 40 per cent to 55 per cent of total waste.

There had been some initial "teething issues" but overall people are said to have responded positively to the changes. As of this week, the fortnightly system is rolling out over a fourth location in North East Cornwall.

This will include addresses in Bodmin, Bude, Launceston, Padstow, Wadebridge, Camelford, Kilkhampton and surrounding areas. Anyone who is part of this new system will have received instructions and the new required bins already.

You will also have been told already about what day your collections are. In some cases, the days of waste collection have been amended to allow for the new system to operate smoothly.

This means North East Cornwall residents are being encouraged to check their collection calendars posted to them or at www.cornwall.gov.uk/myarea to make sure they know which days to put out their food waste, recycling and rubbish.

Cornwall Council said of the changes: "We've chosen to roll the new service out in stages, rather than switching all Cornwall's 280,000 households at once. This is because these are big changes - for you to adapt to and for us to deliver.

"Doing it in stages means we can help any household that needs extra support to adapt. We've organised the order of the rollout around the expected completion dates of building works. This is necessary for us to be able."
