The company behind the game Fortnite is suing a popular YouTuber who shared tips to help players cheat.

Brandon Lucas has some 1.7million subscribers on his Golden Modz channel, according to the BBC.

He also runs a site which sells cheats to help people get a step ahead of their Fortnite opponents, sometimes charging more than $200 (around £150).

One of the hacks allows people to automatically target and shoot enemies, without having to manually aim their weapon.

The report quoted a legal filing from Epic Games, which said: “Defendants are cheaters. Nobody likes a cheater.

"Defendant Lucas not only cheats, he also promotes, advertises, and sells software that enables those who use it to cheat."

In the filing another YouTuber, Colton Conter, is also named.

Both he and Mr Lucas are said to be "creating unauthorised derivative works of Fortnite by unlawfully modifying the game's code".

A statement supplied the BBC said: “a statement: "When cheaters use aimbots or other cheat technologies to gain an unfair advantage, they ruin games for people who are playing fairly. We take cheating seriously, and we'll pursue all available options to make sure our games are fun, fair, and competitive for players."

The Standard has contacted Golden Modz for comment.

On Twitter, an account for Golden Modz posted: “Imagine getting sued for making a youtube video lmao what.”

Mr Lucas also commented in a video posted on September 22, after some of his videos were taken down due to copyright complaints.

He said he does “not understand” why he would be sued over producing videos to “entertain” people.

Fortnite is often played as a ‘battle royale’ style game where 100 competitors are put on a map at a time and then fight to be the last one standing.

There is also a survival version of the game where up to four players compete against computer controlled zombie-like creatures.
