Four people have been injured, one seriously, after a building collapsed in Windsor.

Two builders were left trapped beneath the rubble as emergency services scrambled to the scene, just a mile from the Queen's residence.

One of the men sustained serious injuries and has been taken to the major trauma unit at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford.

The second obtained less serious injuries and was taken to Wexham Park Hospital.

Two other people are being treated by the local ambulance service – no details were provided on the nature of their injuries.

South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) said it received a 999 call at around 9am on Thursday morning.

"We were informed that there were a number of workmen in the property at the time and two of them were trapped by rubble from the collapse," it said in a statement.

A "joint operation" of emergency services and the local council then "ensured the two trapped patients were released and brought out of the building," SCAS added.

Jamie Rose, a resident on the street, described hearing a "loud crashing sound" from outside.

“I was upstairs in my house with the windows open when I heard a loud crashing sound from outside, that sounded like scaffolding falling initially," he said.

“Then the builders working on the property started calling out a name, there didn’t seem to be any response. There was definitely a chap you could hear groaning as well, presumably in pain and discomfort.”

He added: “One of them came out and he was absolutely covered head to foot in dust, so I thought maybe he had fallen through the ceiling.

“When the rescue services were initially coming into the property, they were coming out with shovels of what looked like plasterboard. They seemed to be clearing the way.”

A Royal Berkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesman said: “Crews from Slough and Maidenhead were sent to the scene, alongside the Heavy Rescue Unit from Dee Road and are being supported by crews from Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service and London Fire Brigade.”

He added: “Upon arrival, crews found that the roof of a building had collapsed.

"Four people have been placed in the care of South Central Ambulance Service and teams remain on the scene.”

The site of the incident was close to The Alma pub on the same road.

A local woman told Berkshire Live the pub had provided around 70 bacon butties for emergency service workers.

She told the news site the crews had been working to make sure the building was now structurally sound following.

Local Liberal Democrat councillor Karen Davies warned residents to stay away from the area but said there was "no further danger".

She tweeted: "Please avoid Springfield Road and let the emergency services carry out their work."
