Five Killed After Fair Stage Collapses

Five people have been killed and dozens more injured after an outdoor stage collapsed during windy weather at a fair in the US city of Indianapolis.

Thousands of people at the Indiana State Fair could only watch as rigging fell onto an area where people were sitting.

Dozens of spectators rushed to lift the wreckage and help those trapped underneath.

The death toll initially sat at four but another concert-goer who suffered severe injuries died in hospital on Sunday.

Up to 45 others were hurt - and police have warned more deaths were possible.

Police spokesman Sergeant Rich Myers said: "The degree of injuries for those people ranges from cuts and scraps to very serious injuries.

"I want to be very frank that there is a possibility that we could have other deaths."

The incident happened just before country music group Sugarland were due to perform about 8.50pm local time on Saturday.

Sugarland posted a Twitter message about the incident, saying: "We are all right. We are praying for our fans, and the people of Indianapolis.

"We hope you'll join us. They need your strength."

Witnesses said the crowd had been waiting for the band to begin its concert.

"All of a sudden there was a second gust and the stage started to twist slowly," eyewitness Jason Scofield told local media.

"The grandstand started to shake. Everyone started to run instantly to try and get out."

Mr Scofield said once the stage fell it was "complete chaos".

Indiana State Police and Marion County authorities will lead an investigation into what caused the accident.
