A four-year-old child has accidentally shot a baby at a home in Texas, police say.

The seven-month-old was rushed to hospital but its condition has not been revealed.

A nearby resident in the city of Temple said he saw a police officer carrying a “lifeless-looking” baby out to an ambulance.

One adult was home when the shooting happened, and a woman called police at 2.31pm yesterday, officials said.

Police rushed to the house, which was later cordoned off.

“The police officer carried [the infant] out,” witness Bradley Martin said. “[The baby] just looked lifeless in his hands. You know what I mean. There was blood all over [the infant]. They put [the baby] in the back of an ambulance and took off down the road.”

Temple Police Department's criminal investigations division is working on the case.

Police tweeted: “TPD is in scene where a 4 year old has accidentally shot a 7 month old. The 7 month old is in an unknown condition at the Children’s Hospital. #onscene #temple”

The child was taken to McLane Children's hospital in Temple.
