Four people taken to hospital after bus collides with shelter in Newcastle city centre, causing it to collapse

Four people have been taken to hospital after a bus collided with a bus stop in Newcastle city centre.

Emergency services were called to Market Street, next to Lola Jeans and the Theatre Royal, shortly before midday after reports that a bus had collided with a shelter. ChronicleLive understands that the wingmirror of the bus clipped Bus Stop Z, causing it to collapse.

Photographs and videos taken this afternoon show that although the benches remain, the stop is severely damaged and the roof was knocked off. The bus has since been removed and the remains of the shelter are fenced off as maintenance workers attempt to make the area safe.
