Making exercise entertaining is a near-impossible task – but new Nintendo Switch game ARMS is bound to get you burning calories in no time.

Dalton Wong, personal trainer and founder of TwentyTwoTraining.com, reveals his tips for switching up your game time into gym time.

Add LEGS

Upgrade your ARMS workout to a total body workout. When playing the game incorporate extra jogging, squat and lunge movements, and when the round is over take a 10-15 second rest. Then you go again in the next round — it becomes a proper workout.

Fight like you mean it

Throw your punches with intention. You’ve got to really pull your arm back in and flex it so that you work your triceps, biceps, shoulders and core. You’re recruiting more muscles, so you’re working a lot harder.

Get pumped up

Your heart is a muscle. The game increases your heart rate, meaning it’s working your cardiovascular system. You burn more calories when you increase your heart rate because your body has to work harder.

Box clever

If ARMS has got you off the sofa and has given you the inclination to be more active, try a boxing class at a gym. I go to Islington Boxing Club in Upper Holloway, where they do classes for all ages and abilities. It’s a really cost-effective way to exercise.
