Josh Trank's 2015 Fantastic Four reboot is widely regarded as both a critical and commercial flop, and there aren't many who'd disagree with that.

But that doesn't mean 20th Century Fox has given up on bringing Marvel's oldest comic book back to the big screen.

"We're very interested in doing another Fantastic Four movie, and we love that cast, and it's really about getting the tone right," writer-producer Simon Kinberg told LRM.

"I felt like on that last movie, we did something bold and it didn't entirely work, and I think part of the issue is that we went away from the core tone and vibe of the comics.

"The comics themselves are fun and playful and really about inner personal family dynamics, and we did something different and took a chance, and I am sort of proud of the fact that we took a chance, and disappointed that it didn't totally work.

"I think as we go back into it and talk about it, we'd want to be truer to the core voice, tone, vibe of the source material."

To give the film its due, the cast of Kate Mara, Miles Teller, Michael B Jordan and Jamie Bell did a fine job of translating the Fantastic Four to the screen.

Much like Suicide Squad, it felt like a movie that the studio had lost confidence in at the last minute, leading to a series of changes that resulted in a badly-paced mess. The fact that you can spot all the new scenes with the help of Mara's terrible wig doesn't help matters.

We will never know how well Trank's "fantastic version" would have been received.

Kinberg revealed recently that Fox intends to release two X-Men movies in 2018.
